Pacific Union College Fights to Retain Property Rights Letters Needed Now!!

Voicing your support for Pacific Union College (PUC) has never been more important. As you may know, PacificUnionCollege sits on over 1,900 acres of the most beautiful and desirable land in NapaValley, one of the premier destinations on the West Coast.  For 100 years, PUC has held this land in sacred trust, maintaining miles of hiking trails, ancient trees, and wildlife.

Now PUC is facing the fight of its life.  What's happened is that PUC has proposed developing a small area--17.5 acres of new development and 57 acres of adaptive reuse--on land already zoned for that purpose. This Ecovillage project is so environmentally friendly that the entire project will use the same amount of water that PUC currently uses without the project.  PUC has always exercised stewardship over its natural resources, and always will.

The Napa County Board of Supervisors is considering a proposal that right now, before the project even gets to the approval process, which would rezone all land from Planned Development to a combination of Institutional and Agricultural zoning, thereby eliminating the ability for PUC to develop the Ecovillage project or any future project.

On February 26, 2008, the County Board of Supervisors will meet to consider changes to local land use law that, if adopted, will deprive PUC of the right to build this small project on its College land. These changes, being considered as part of the County’s General Plan update, pose a severe threat to PUC.

  • Down zoning PUC’s land threatens the College’s ability to fulfill its educational mission, provide community services, and secure its future and the future of those who depend on PUC.

  • Pulling PUC-owned land out of the Angwin bubble discriminates against PUC. Ten other bubbles throughout the County are being left untouched until some unspecified time in the future.  PUC deserves equal treatment with other property owners.

  • The General Plan should not be manipulated to torpedo the proposed Ecovillage. That project should be debated and decided on its own merits. This restriction of current land rights is an attempt to prevent completion of the EIR and allow the community to make up its own mind about the Ecovillage.

  •
  • Taking away PUC’s development rights will run roughshod over private property rights, and is counter to the County’s stated policy of supporting the College. Tell the Board to keep its promise.
