5,000 Nevada Seventh-day Adventists potentially disenfranchised by scheduling of caucuses

January 14, 2008 - Sacramento, California - The North American Religious Liberty Association - West (NARLA-West) expressed concern on behalf of 5,000 Adventists and thousands of observant Jews and other Sabbath-keepers who may not be participating in the Nevada caucuses which are scheduled for specific times on Saturday morning, January 19.  No accommodation has been made for observant Saturday Sabbath-keepers.

Seventh-day Adventists, like observant Jews, refrain from secular work and activities between sundown Friday and sundown Saturday.

"It is inconceivable to me that in our nation, that includes people of all faiths as equal citizens under the law, entire religious groups would be so callously excluded from the electoral process," said Alan Reinach, NARLA-West president.  "This exclusion of thousands of potential voters casts a shadow on the legitimacy of the election."

Although it does not expect the parties to change the January 19 caucus date, NARLA-West urges organizers to be sensitive in scheduling future caucuses to ensure that all have the opportunity to participate in the democratic process.

The North American Religious Liberty Association - West is the oldest public interest organization in the Western United States dedicated exclusively to the preservation of freedom of conscience.
